HOW TO STOP FACEBOOK APPS FROM SHARING YOUR INFORMATION

Few weeks ago a data privacy scandal was in the news which involved Facebook and a political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. User information of over 87 million Facebook users where either exposed by Facebook to the consulting firm or the firm "inappropriately" obtained the data, beginning from year 2014. Following this incident Facebook has come up with some security settings that can help users evaluate third party apps already connected to their accounts.

There are several third party apps on Facebook which by way of design accesses user information and can possibly share such information illegally. Therefore Facebook has released a statement advising users to review these settings and see exactly the apps currently connected to users accounts from the time the user joined Facebook till date.

The statement reads "We understand the importance of keeping your data safe, and we are making it easier for you to control the which apps you share information with. You can go to Apps and websites section of your settings at any time to see the apps and websites you've logged in to using Facebook. You can also remove the ones you don't want to have connected to Facebook anymore."

Here is a step by step guide on checking and adjusting these settings accordingly when logged in to your Facebook account either from a Web Browser or Mobile App. From time to time you would see a pop-up message like the image below if you haven't adjusted the settings yet.

To view and adjust the settings when logged on via Facebook App;
Step1: Go to Settings > Account Settings

Step2: Go to Apps

Step3: You will see the categories under Apps and websites as shown below, choose accordingly;

Step 4: Choose Edit under "Logged in with Facebook" you'll see three tabs - Active, Expired and Removed. Click each tab tab see the apps and review accordingly. To remove any simply choose and remove.

 Step 5: Go back to Step 3 and choose Edit under "Apps, Websites and Games" read through displayed info and make a decision either to turn of or close.

NB: If logged in via Web Browser, simply Go to Settings > Apps and websites.

I hope you find this blog post useful as per keeping your Facebook account and personal information safe and secured.
